Aufgewachsen in Wildhaus im Toggenburg, erhielt Matthias Roth seinen ersten Klavierunterricht von Katrin Giordanengo und Wolfgang Sieber. Nach der Matura studierte er Klavier an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Dort absolvierte er Lehr- und Konzertdiplom bei Hadassa Schwimmer und Karl-Andreas Kolly. Nebst seiner Konzerttätigkeit unterrichtet er Klavier an der Kantonsschule Zürcher Oberland in Wetzikon – eine äusserst bereichernde Mischung. Eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle für die Musik sind ihm die Berge, seine zweite grosse Leidenschaft.
Weitere Impulse erhielt er 2004 bis 2008 in Klavierimprovisation von André Desponds, Kurse und weiterer Unterrricht bei Ivan Klánský, Werner Bärtschi, Cyprien Katsaris, Jürg Wyttenbach, Henri Pousseur, Ilse Doráti-von Alpenheim u.a.
